I have oily skin which gets even more oily in the summer. I get small white dots all over my face and also blackheads on my nose and big pimples, especially before my periods. Please tell me what should I do to make my skin less oliy. I feel very embarassed to go out as I know my skin does not look soft and shiny like other peoples skin. - Neha Jain, Delhi
There is no doubt that this is very distressing problem. You can never feel like you are looking your best because of the condition of your skin. Although it is very difficult to cure acne, it can most certainly be controlled and minimized with proper care and treatment.
Here are some tips you can try at home.
* Keep your skin surpulously clean by washing it twice or thrice a day- depending on how oily your skin is.
* Always use an astringent after a wash. It helps close the pores and prevents to some extend the production of sebum or oil.
* Do not use abrasive substances for cleansing because scrubbing tends to over stimulate the oil glands which is counter productive.
* Style your hair in such a way that it does not fall on your face. If your skin is oily, it generally follows that your hair is oily too. If it is then shampoo it every alternate day and do it daily if needed.
* Do not use a conditioner after a shampoo as it often tends to make the hair oily. Use a scalp revitalizer as it reduces the build up of oil and keeps your scalp clean.
* Apply lotions specially formulated to cure pimples. Both the Aroma Magic and Shahnaz Herbal range have excellent anti pimple lotions.
* If you have blackheads and whiteheads, have them removed at a palour. Do not steam your face at home and try and pinch them out. It will only make matters worse.
* Avoid deep fried food, pastries and junk food. Eat simple home cooked meals with less oil and spices. Have plenty of salads and fresh fruits. Drink atleast 8-10 glasses of water everyday, avoid fizzy drinks- have fruit juices instead.
